Unmet emotional needs

I believe that our emotional body serves as a powerful sensing organ, guiding us towards situations that are either beneficial or detrimental to our well-being.

Let's explore how our emotional body communicates through feelings and how we can engage in a simple self-reflection to enhance our emotional health.

Imagine your emotional body wanted to let your mind know
that it’s making a choice which hurts
that you’re in situations which aren’t good for you
that you’re entangled with others who aren’t the best fit for you.

It may do that by producing anxiety, irritability, or heavy sadness.

Our emotional body is a powerful sensing organ. Its main function is to let the mind know when you are where you are meant to be - in health, safety, support, love, expansion - and when you are not - in toxicity, depletion, degeneration, danger, pain, constriction.

Our emotional body relays these messages to our minds via feelings

Pleasant feelings indicate positive feedback: you’re choosing well for yourself

Unpleasant feelings indicate a change is needed, because some of your emotional needs are not being met. When you make the shifts to meet your emotional needs, the unpleasant feeling disappears, as the message is no longer being sent.

If you’re experiencing one of the unpleasant feelings listed above, your emotional body is talking to you about some unmet emotional need.

Here’s a short self reflection to help you get a bit more clear on what changes are needed for you to respond to that message, and feel better.

  1. What situations in my life do I have unpleasant feelings about?

  2. For each situation, what would allow me to feel great? (e.g. appreciated by X,  time to meditate in the mornings, support to get me past my self doubt and procrastination)

  3. How can I give myself a bit more of what I need (as identified in the the question above)?

  4. How can I receive support to give myself a bit more of what I need? (e.g. ask for validation, have better boundaries around bedtime, work with someone for support and accountability)

Don’t get too analytical. This is a great self reflection to lead with your gut feeling on the answers, and to trust your inner voice.

If you are asking yourself these questions, you are stepping into greater emotional ease and health! That’s already a powerful step in the right direction.

Every step counts,

Dr. Siva
